War and Military History in Lahti and the Surrounding Region

The Hennala district in Lahti hosted a Finnish garrison from 1920 until the end of 2014.

In 1918, Lahti and its surrounding areas were the site of fierce battles between the German Landungsabteilung Brandenstein and Red revolutionaries. After the fighting ended, a prisoner-of-war camp was established in the Hennala barracks area, which had been vacated by Russian forces.

After the Winter War, Lahti served as the headquarters for the II Corps, which was tasked with fortifying and guarding Finland’s southeastern border. The most heavily fortified section of the Salpa Line was constructed within the II Corps' sector. At that time, Lennart Oesch served as the commander of the II Corps, with Valo Nihtilä as the Chief of Staff.

During the Winter War, the Pyhäniemi ice airfield operated in Hollola. During the Continuation War, the Hälvälä airfield was built in Hollola, and the Vesivehmaa airfield was constructed in Asikkala.

During the interim peace of the Continuation War, an Army Corps headquarters operated in Lahti. The city housed various Finnish Defence Forces offices, and the Allied Control Commission visited Lahti occasionally.

After the wars, the Lahti garrison continued its pre-winter war mission of training conscripts and professional personnel for various logistics and maintenance roles. The Lahti garrison served as a training center for the Logistics Corps until it was decommissioned in 2014.
